Hello. Welcome to my site. I'm Rosemary, aka Rosemary I. Patterson, Ph.D. I'm a former School Psychologist who through travelling became fascinated with an area of Psychology known as Identity Achievement (who am I and what do I want to do with my life). As a result of a visit to Hawaii I realised that many Hawaiians would have a particularly hard job of successfully completing the Identity Achievement task of Adolescence. As a result of the importation of 400,000 people from all over the world to work the sugar plantations in the nineteen hundreds and early twentieth Century many Hawaiians are a combination of Hawaiian, Portuguese, Filipino, English, Norwegian, German, Chinese, Japanese etc. They would have to choose between one of their backgrounds, Mainland American Identity or some combination of all the cultures they have descended from.
The result of this musing was a further looking into the history of Hawaii producing five historical novels and one young adult Adventure that cover the history of Hawaii from 1820 to 2011. Like Barack Obama most people of Hawaii have a very diversified background. The reader will find it interesting to look at Barack Obama's formative years.
All my historical novels contain actual history enriched by fictional characters, both past and contemporary. They are available in both Kindle e-book form and print form from Amazon.com. TO ORDER CLICK ON THE COVER.
IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER, MY BOOKS ARE:
KUHINA NUI tells the story of Hawaii's great Queen Ka'ahumanu, who co-ruled Hawaii after the death of her husband King Kamehameha and then as Queen Regent when Kamehameha II died in London from the measles. The picture on the cover is of King Kamehameha's temple, the recreation of which is still located in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii. The wooden figures on the top are wooden representatives of Hawaiian Deities. The missionaries presumed these were idols worshipped by a primitive people but some more modern interpreters of the Hawaiian religion regard the large headresses on these idols as representing the expansion of consciousness that occurs with contact with the Divine.
Queen Ka'ahumanu was converted during illness by the missionaries who came to Hawaii in 1820 and she made many decisions to Christianize and Westernize Hawaiians. In KUHINA NUI, I have her summoned by the Hawaiian Deities and ordered to travel around all the islands of Hawaii with two modern day conscripts and evaluate whether her decisions were beneficial to modern day Native Hawaiians. The book is also a romance novel with the main characters conscripted by Queen Ka'ahumanu herself.

WHAT DID YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT THIS BOOK?
"I WAS IMPRESSED BY THIS AUTHOR'S ENCYCLOPEDIC KNOWLEDGE OF HAWAIIAN CUSTOMS AND HISTORY. I ALSO LIKE THE POLITICAL CONSCIENCE THAT GUIDES THE NOVEL. THIS IS A BOOK WRITTEN FOR A REASON. OF THE CHARACTERS, I WAS MOST IMPRESSED BY KAPEKA AND THE VOICE SHE HEARS. AND - IT GOES WITHOUT SAYING - THIS NOVEL HAS A VERY STRONG SENSE OF PLACE, COMMUNICATED NOT ONLY IN VISUAL DETAIL, BUT IN A WELL-CRAFTED SENSE OF MOOD AND ATMOSPHERE.'
IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER MY SECOND HAWAII HISTORICAL NOVEL IS;
kULA KEIKI ALI'I translates as The Chief's Children's School. In 1840 the Calvinist missionaries who had come to Hawaii from Boston were given the children who would become Monarchs of Hawaii in a form of adoption called Hanai and placed them in a Residential School where they lived for six years without a break. In my opinion they were indoctrinated rather than educated and suffered enormous self-worth damage, identity confusion, and even physical abuse by the overly zealous Calvinist views and actions of their teacher Amos Cooke. The book is also a romance novel with the spirit of Queen Lili'uokalani conscripting two modern day people to do her foot work for her.
KULA KEIKI ALI'I follows these students through the tumultuous years of their schooling/indoctrination and into their adult lives where in my opinion the treatment they had received affected their reigns resulting in the loss of the Hawaiian Kingdom to the United States.
The picture on the cover is that of Waipio Valley, where King Kamehameha 1 received his training in warfare, governing and the principles of the Hawaiian religion which he never gave up.
REVIEW OF KULA KEIKI ALI'I - The Hawaiian News, Honolulu, Hawaii.
"THE OVERALL BOOK MAKES FOR INTERESTING READING ESPECIALLY IF THE READER IS INTERESTED IN A MYSTERY WITHIN A HAWAIIAN HISTORICAL SETTING."
IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER THE NEXT BOOK IS;
It is 1920 on the Island of Kauai. KULIANO is an orphan Native Hawaiian being raised by a beloved Canoe Priest when a Hawaiian Prince decides to use him as an upward mobility symbol of what Hawaiians can become if they convert to Christianity and follow American ways. He forcibly removes Kuliano from the Kalalau Valley and enrolls him in an exclusive school for wealthy Americans. Kuliano only wants to return to the Kalalau Valley, where a number of Native Hawaiians desperately try to hang onto the old ways. He loves surfing and longs to finish the outrigger canoe that he and his mentor, the Canoe Priest, have been making.
The historical novel follows Kuliano through his adolescence, his marriage to the beautiful Hawaiian maid of the Prince, and his attempt to make a go of the third rate grazing land awarded as homesteads to Hawaiians in the Hawaiian Rehabilitation Act of 1926 in return for 26,000 acres of the best agricultural land given in perpetuity to the powerful American descendant sugar plantation owners.
The picture on the cover of KULIANO is that of the magnificent Kalalau Vallely on the Na Pali Coast of Kauai.

Her dreams of becoming a teacher become disrupted as she meets a fire-dancer from Tahiti who calls himself a Prince. ALOHA AND MAI TAIS follows Kimi Kai'ika through the nineteen thirties and the second world war.
The picture on the cover is that of the Aloha Tower that still stands today welcoming visitors to Hawaii from all over the world.
REVIEW OF ALOHA AND MAI TAIS - FIVE STAR REVIEW FROM MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW

IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER THE FIFTH BOOK OF MY HAWAIIAN SERIES IS;
AN END TO INNOCENCE tells the story of a gorgeous part-Hawaiian, part-Japanese young woman whose plans of attending the University of Hawaii on Manoa are disrupted by meeting a very charming American Marine. Readers follow Kelia Nimura as she becomes educated about affairs of the heart and Hawaiian resistance to over development on Oahu as Hawaii's most populated Island is transformed from a haven for agriculture to a place of residence for wealthy Americans. The novel covers the time period from 1960 to 2010. "An End To Innocence" is a love, romance novel with the main character growing from each encounter with an emotionally unavailable love interest.
The cover is that of two people swimming on Haleiwa Beach as Kelia and her Marine do in the novel.
IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER MY SIXTH HAWAII NOVEL IS "LILIHA AND THE SACRED TRUST." IT IS MY FIRST YOUNG ADULT ADVENTURE NOVEL THAT ADULTS WOULD ALSO FIND VERY INTERESTING.
In "LILIHA AND THE SACRED TRUST" fourteen year old Liliha Kane is given the task of finding two of Hawaii's greatest kings' bones in order for her grandfather, a kahuna to use them in a secret ceremony to try and save both an area on Kauai from Mt. Hu'upo to the sea from becoming a resort/residential enclave and to stop another military runway on the Island of Ni'ihau. Liliha only wants to grow up and marry handsome Kimo Kekela but instead she, her sister Jenny, who knows everything, her Poi dog Mano and Kimo himself must learn to climb cliffs, overcome fears, ward off agents of Evil, Night Marchers and climb Mt. Waialeale on Kauai before they accomplish their task. The result is a riveting and interesting, informative novel.
The hat on the left side of the picture looks like a Power hat worn by High Chiefs and Hawaiian Kings before western contact. It may also represent the power of a wave when taken at its height as Hanalei is a surfing mecca. The hat is in front of the Hanalei Elementary School on the Island of Kauai.
